CFSI Emergency Response Teams (ERTs) have established a field presence in Tacloban and Ormoc in Leyte and Guiuan in Eastern Samar.
In the 10 days since Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) struck the Philippines, CFSI’s ERTs have assessed needs, provided urgent psychosocial care to survivors and paved the way for larger-scale relief deliveries.
The general objectives of CFSI’s humanitarian response are to save lives, prevent disability and indignity, and promote early recovery.

The scale of the disaster is enormous; the typhoon affected more than 13 million people, displaced more than 4 million, left thousands dead, and destroyed almost all homes and buildings in its path.
For this humanitarian operation, CFSI is prioritizing the provinces of Eastern Samar, Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte and Tacloban City. In the next few weeks, CFSI is likely to expand coverage to other affected areas in the Visayas.
CFSI activity in the disaster-affected areas will be carried out in close cooperation with the affected communities and partners (such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Department of Education, UN agencies, NGOs, people’s organizations and other key stakeholders).
This operation is presently expected to involve: (1) Protection, including the rapid distribution of such desperately needed non-food items as tarpaulins for shelter and solar lights; (2) Child protection, including the establishment of child-friendly spaces and temporary learning structures; (3) Psychosocial care and livelihood activities, with a particular focus on people with disabilities and those with special needs; and (4) Food assistance, such as emergency food supply, food for work and related interventions.
CFSI is rapidly scaling up its operations and is seeking funds for its humanitarian response, suitably qualified personnel, and links to local government officials, NGOs, people’s organizations and other key stakeholders.
