After the success of the one-stop shop registration of boats for fisherfolks last August 2019, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region IX awarded two Sama Bajau Women’s Livelihood Groups from Rio Hondo and Arena Blanco with equipment and materials for their food vending livelihood activities.

This initiative is part of the strong partnership established by CFSI with BFAR to assist the local fisherfolks in Zamboanga City, particularly the Sama Bajaus. The livelihood input assistance was handed over by BFAR Officials with CFSI Community Organizers on 19 September 2019 at the BFAR Region IX Office.

Harija Dari, leader of the women’s group from Rio Hondo, expressed her gratitude to CFSI for facilitating their group’s access to such services, as well as to the government agencies for their assistance to Sama Bajaus in the city. The inputs, according to her, would contribute significantly to their community and families in improving their source of income. The leader of the women’s group from Arena Blanco also shared her appreciation by thanking CFSI and BFAR for the support.

The distribution of livelihood inputs and the one-stop shop boat registration were conducted as part of the Sama Bajau Capacity Strengthening Project (SBCSP) being implemented by CFSI with funding support from the European Union (EU). Thirty two (32) families successfully registered their boats last 06 August 2019 with the assistance of the Office of the City Agriculturist (OCA), Maritime Police, and City Treasury.
