On 9 May 2019, the Sama Bajau Capacity Strengthening Project (SBCSP) of Community and Family Services International (CFSI) with funding support from the European Union (EU) and in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) Division Office commenced with the Basic Literacy Program for Adults (BLPA)  through an orientation with the Instructional Managers (IMs) on the SBCSP and the envisioned BLPA outcomes. This was conducted at the CFSI Sub-Office Zamboanga Conference Room attended by four IMs, the DepEd ALS Focal, and the Education Program Specialist.

The orientation included a discussions on the schedule and assignments for the first batch of BLPA for SBCSP. Under the Education Component of the SBCSP, the BLPA aims to provide functional literacy focusing on basic reading, writing and numeracy with appropriate skills enhancement, practices and techniques contributing to the literacy rates among Sama Bajaus.

During the initial orientation and intake of learners for the BLPA, beneficiaries were excited for the start of their classes and jokingly called each other “classmates”. They were also enthusiastic about going to school despite being adults and jokingly told the team that they will have their uniforms be made already for the opening of their classes.

2019 May - SBCSP Activities.1

The Same Bajau Capacity Strengthening Project (SBCSP) is funded by the European Union and is implemented by CFSI. This aims to support vulnerable Sama Bajau families and address their risks to statelessness. EU’s assistance will provide education opportunities for Sama Bajau beneficiaries.

Classes for the BLPA is expected to start by 1st week of June 2019.
